Over the past few months, we have been thinking deeply about the several invisible stories that climate change is silencing—not through fire, cyclones or flood alone, but through the quiet fading of songs, dances, and languages that once mirrored the rhythms of nature. 
 
Across rural India, folk forms like 𝑩𝒂𝒖𝒍 𝒈𝒂𝒂𝒏 in Bengal, 𝑱𝒂𝒕𝒓𝒂 𝑷𝒂𝒍𝒂 in Odisha, and 𝑺𝒐𝒉𝒓𝒂𝒊 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑲𝒉𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒓 murals in Jharkhand carry the memory of monsoons, harvests, forests, and rivers. Today, they’re disappearing—silenced by disrupted seasons, distressed migrations, and disappearing ecosystems. As droughts deepen and monsoons falter, communities migrate and the songs lose context. Cultural memory begins to fade! 
 
There are examples though, where women are reclaiming back these stories and leading cultural-climate restoration activities with quiet conviction, as follows:  
 
● In Keonjhar, Odisha, PramilaPradhan and her all-women 𝑺𝒂𝒏𝒌𝒊𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒍𝒊s have reduced forest-fire incidents by over six-fold through devotional awareness songs—reviving tradition while protecting shared landscapes. 
● In Jharkhand, the Tribal Women Artists Cooperative is generating livelihoods by reviving 𝑲𝒉𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒐𝒉𝒓𝒂𝒊 𝒎𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒍𝒔, anchoring climate resilience in cultural continuity . 
● Indigenous women in Odisha are spearheading “dream-mapping” of common lands—claiming shrinking forest territory back as ecological memory and legal action. 
● In Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, SouthCentralZoneCulturalCentre‘s (SCZCC’s) School Connect programme brings masters of 𝑹𝒂𝒊, 𝑷𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒉𝒊 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑩𝒂𝒊𝒈𝒂 𝑲𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒂 into school auditoriums—reconnecting youth with climate-tied performances . 
● In Rajasthan‑Punjab, 𝑻𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒋𝒂𝒏 𝒄𝒊𝒓𝒄𝒍𝒆𝒔 and community media platforms empower women to weave cotton, share songs, and keep agro‑ecological know-how alive—even as migration reshapes villages. 
 
This is important to because local cultural traditions of music, art and theatre conves climate wisdom: seasonal songs, planting season narratives, water stories—these are ecological GPS systems embedded in art.
